FIRST NEWSLETTER FROM THE 2010 REGIME

We were treated to a great number of Newsletters put out by Don Yeaman.  Hopefully we can keep up the information and news as well as was done in the past!

ENTRIES FOR THE FIRST THREE TOURNAMENTS IN 2010

On Monday, March 8th and Tuesday, March 9th, we will tee off with a 9:00 AM shotgun at the University of New Mexico Championship Golf Course.  The entry fee for whichever day you choose is $55.  Lunch is not included.  However, the golf course promised a special for the day for the NM Seniors.  March 22nd we are going to Socorro for 8:30 am and 1:30 PM shotguns.  Their great lunch is included in the price of $66.  Then on April 5th we will be at Santa Ana Golf course in Bernalillo.  A shotgun start at 9:00 am is scheduled.  The cost is $63. which does not include lunch.  But, if you’ve had their burgers and sandwiches, they are great!

Each of the tournaments will be individual play, full handicaps with cart and green fees, prize money and range balls included.  At the UNM Golf course, you have your choice of playing Monday or Tuesday.

REMINDER TO RECORD YOUR ENTRY ON YOUR CALENDAR

When you send in your check for each tournament, write down the date, the course you are playing and the tee time you requested on your calendar so you won’t forget, which happens quite a few times during the year.  Also, one check for each tournament.  You many send multiple entries in one envelope.

COMMENTS FROM PRESIDENT DON DOWNEY

As I write this in early January, there is still snow in my yard and it is about 32 degrees outside.  However, the calendar assures me there are only 2 months until our first tournament at UNM.  We have a great schedule this year, combining both in and out of town golf courses.  Bill Blackstad has been  working hard to put it together.

As noted elsewhere in this newsletter, the Executive Committee has implemented a change in tee placement for all members 70 years and over.  Please note that this is strictly voluntary and is the result of many comments received over the years.  It is intended to provide a more rewarding golfing experience for those of us who have lost a little distance in our game.

We will also address the issue of slow play this year.  We get more complaints about slow play than any other matter.  Let’s all try to be aware of our pace of play this year!

We have expanded the Executive Committee this year.  New members Don Trujillo, Warren Von Worley, Bill Craig, and Ronnie Mercer have already made significant contributions to our organization.  Welcome!

If you have not renewed your membership yet it’s not too late.  Get your renewal form in ASAP and bring a new member in as well.  Suggestions for improving our golfing operations are welcome and encouraged.  Contact me or any committee member at any time.

TEE ASSIGNMENTS FOR THE TOURNAMENT SEASON

After a lengthy discussion at the last Executive Board meeting, it was agreed to have only two (2) tee boxes during each tournament.  These will be the middle and forward tees.  All players who have reached the age of 70 (“Super Seniors”) by January 1st of each year will play from the forward tees, regardless of handicap.  The forward tees will continue to be used for all players with a handicap of 30 and above.  However, a player who is 70 or over may, not later than February 15th, make a declaration to play from the middle tees.  If this election is made, the player must play from the middle tees the entire yeas.  There will be a separate flight for the “Super Seniors”.  Prize money in this flight will be on a NET SCORE basis.  To declare your intentions to move up to the middle tees, call Hal Donovan at 891-2522.  He will assign you to your preference of tees.
